At the first-ever Players Weekend in August 2017, Major League Baseball players wore jerseys with their nicknames on the back. One player — Cleveland Indians shortstop, Francisco Lindor — picked the perfect moniker to express his cheerful, fun-loving nature: “Mr. Smile.” And Lindor gave fans plenty to smile about when he belted a 2-run homer into the stands while wearing his new jersey!
Lindor has explained that he believes smiling is an important part of connecting with fans and teammates alike: “I’ve never been a fan of the guy that makes a great play and then acts like he’s done it 10,000 times — smile, man! We’ve got to enjoy the game.”
We think Lindor is right: Smiling is a great way to generate good will. And it feels great too… as long as you have a smile that’s healthy, and that looks as good as you want it to. But what if you don’t? Here are some things we can do at the dental office to help you enjoy smiling again:
Routine Professional Cleanings & Exams. This is a great place to start on the road toward a healthy, beautiful smile. Even if you are conscientious about brushing and flossing at home, you won’t be able to remove all of the disease-causing dental plaque that can hide beneath the gum line, especially if it has hardened into tartar, but we can do it easily in the office. Then, after a thorough dental exam, we can identify any problems that may be affecting your ability to smile freely, such as tooth decay, gum disease, or cosmetic dental issues.
Cosmetic Dental Treatments. If your oral health is good but your smile is not as bright as you’d like it to be, we can discuss a number of cosmetic dental treatments that can help. These range from conservative procedures such as professional teeth whitening and bonding to more dramatic procedures like porcelain veneers or crowns.
Tooth Replacement. Many people hide their smiles because they are embarrassed by a gap from a missing tooth. That’s a shame, because there are several excellent tooth-replacement options in a variety of price ranges. These include partial and full dentures, bridgework, and dental implants. So don’t let a missing tooth stop you from being Mr. (or Ms.) Smile!

You may be able to slow the aging process with healthy habits but you can’t stop it. Every part of your body will change, including your teeth and gums. And even with great dental hygiene and care, there are at least two aging outcomes you may not be able to avoid: discoloration and tooth wear.
Fortunately though, we have ways to counteract these effects and help you enjoy a much younger-looking smile. These techniques range in complexity and cost, but when tailored to your individual situation they can make a world of difference and restore your confidence in your smile.
Brightening teeth that have yellowed with age can be as simple as undergoing teeth whitening. The bleaching solution in this procedure (performed in the office or at home with a prescribed kit) can minimize enamel staining built up over the years. It can even be performed with some control over the level of desired brightness. Although whitening isn’t permanent, with proper care and regular touch-ups you can keep your youthful, dazzling smile for some time.
Tooth whitening, however, may not be enough in some cases of discoloration. If so, you can gain a bright new smile with porcelain veneers or crowns. A veneer is a thin layer of tooth-colored material bonded to the front of a tooth; a porcelain crown completely covers a tooth and is usually cemented onto it.
Normal tooth wearing can also affect the appearance of older teeth, making them look shorter and with less rounded edges than younger teeth. Veneers and crowns can be utilized for this problem too, as well as enamel shaping with a dental drill to minimize those sharp edges and project a softer, younger appearance. In extreme cases, surgically reshaping the gums can give teeth a longer and a more natural look.
These are just a few of the ways we can address these two aging problems, as well as others like receding gums. Depending on your situation, it’s quite possible we can help you take years off your smile.
There are many ways in which your smile could benefit from cosmetic dentistry.
Are you looking to refresh your appearance and give yourself a makeover? While some people may turn to hair dyes or new glasses, our Lakewood, CO, cosmetic dentist, Dr. Thomas Nyvold, is here to tell you why you may want to consider getting cosmetic dentistry. Cosmetic dentistry is an easy and effective way to improve the overall appearance of your smile while also boosting your confidence.
Enhance Your Appearance
Whether you have yellow teeth or a gap between your teeth, there are many imperfections that can leave you with a less-than-perfect smile. Don’t worry, though. Our Lakewood dentist offers a full range of cosmetic services, from simple and quick treatments to more comprehensive and altering options. Nothing is too small or too large for us to tackle. We can get teeth whiter, we can improve the overall shape of your smile and we can even get you a straighter smile thanks to cosmetic dentistry.
Prevent Future Damage
While cosmetic dentistry is meant to improve the look of your smile and isn’t meant to restore teeth, sometimes it can actually offer both cosmetic and restorative benefits. Think about it: If you have a tooth that is cracked or chipped, this damage could continue to get worse over time. If you have a misaligned bite that leads you to grind your teeth then you could increase your chances of a fractured tooth. By getting dental bonding or veneers, we could actually strengthen the tooth and help to keep further damage from happening.
Take Years Off Your Appearance
Yellow, stained and cracked teeth will not only put a damper on your overall appearance but it can also make you look older. That’s because stains and other issues are often linked with getting older. By getting a more vibrant and even smile we can also make you look a bit younger, too (and who doesn’t want that?).

What your dentist in Lakewood wants you to know
If you want to fix small imperfections in your smile quickly, easily and painlessly, bonding and cosmetic contouring is the perfect choice for you. They are the go-to treatments to fix many unsightly problems with your teeth and your smile. Dr. Thomas Nyvold at T.E.N. Family Dentistry in Lakewood, CO, wants to share what bonding and cosmetic contouring can do for you.
Bonding and cosmetic contouring can reshape and revitalize your smile by fixing small imperfections like these:
- Excessive wear due to aging or bad habits
- Small chips or cracks due to accidents or injuries
- Small imperfections due to genetics
- Unevenly spaced or overlapped teeth due to genetics
- Heavily discolored, yellowed or darkened teeth due to aging or bad habits
A dental bonding procedure begins with etching gel, which creates microscopic indentations in your tooth structure to retain the bonding material. Next is the application of strong cement, which creates a firm attachment of the bonding material to your tooth.
The bonding material itself is a unique liquid resin known as composite, which can be color-matched and shaped to match your tooth perfectly. The composite is applied, sculpted, shaped and then hardened with a high-tech ultraviolet light.
During the cosmetic contouring procedure, your existing teeth and your new composite bonding will be shaped using a variety of high-speed tools to form a harmonious, dazzling smile that is uniquely yours.
There are many reasons why people choose dental bonding and cosmetic contouring. These are just a few:
- Treatment is painless
- Treatment is usually quick, often in one appointment
- You will see immediate results you will love

The same tooth-colored resin used to fill a cavity is also used to cover these flaws. We apply this moldable resin, shape it and then harden it with our special dental laser. It can even be completed in just one visit.

Dental veneers: If you have more moderate aesthetic issues that dental bonding just can’t cover, the next best option is dental veneers. These ultra-thin porcelain veneers are designed to look just like your natural teeth and are applied to the front of your teeth using a dental resin. Veneers are custom-made to improve the overall shape, size and color of your smile. Once your teeth are prepared to accommodate veneers, the veneers can then be applied to your teeth.
Dental implants: Are you missing one or more permanent teeth? Looking for a long-term solution? Dental implants might just be the way to go! Implants are the only tooth replacement that are designed to look and function like natural teeth. With dental implants, we won’t have to prepare surrounding teeth like you would to have a dental bridge placed. That means less of your teeth are affected. With implants, from a single dental crown to an implant supported denture, we can help create a beautiful smile.
